It's no secret that construction sites are dangerous places to work. In fact, the 2018 Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries Summary in 2018 reported that over 1,000 construction workers died on the job that year. That's equivalent to around 19 workers every week going to work and then not returning home to their spouses, children, or other loved ones.
This is what drives safety managers, coordinators, directors, adviser, engineers, specialists, inspectors, and officers to improve workplace safety any way they can.
Effective construction site communication is critical to employee safety. While most workers may have a cell phone, they may not have it on them to keep it from getting damaged. Also, in an emergency that causes heavy cell phone usage, calls may not even get through, or coverage may be spotty. Dialing a phone number is also slower than the instant communication provided by 2-way radios, however not everyone has a radio either. But the use of products based on 2-way radio technology allows for a one-to-many form of communication that you really can't do effectively with cell phones.
There are multiple 2-way radio devices that work together to solve these problems and together they provide a comprehensive emergency communication system as shown in the following diagram. These communication products can be used for all sorts of warnings and calls for help such as medical emergencies, fires, explosions, tornadoes, earthquakes, lightning, floods, poisoning, toxic gas releases, electrocution, structural failures, heavy equipment failures, and other hazardous material incidents.
Wireless PA Receivers/Speakers
These receivers receive transmissions from 2-way radio devices. The transmissions are amplified and then sent to the attached horn speaker. Up to two of these horn speakers can operate on one receiver for greater coverage area. You just need to provide power to the receiver. With these you can broadcast messages quickly to anyone within hearing distance of these very loud speakers.
Instead of requiring everyone to carry a two-way radio, you can scatter these weatherproof callboxes all around the construction site. Since they are battery-powered and wireless, they can be moved at a moment's notice, which means you can put them in high-risk areas as they change. These callboxes are also used in construction elevators or man lifts to summon the elevator.
Voice Notification System
Some emergencies are unique and need a detailed message broadcasted. For others a warning tone or recorded message may be sufficient. A voice notification device enables you to record custom voice messages or tones in it, and then they are broadcast whenever a button is pressed. You can have up to four different messages or tones programmed in it.
Base Station 2-Way Radio
These heavy-duty non-weatherproof radios can be used in offices to broadcast or receive messages to and from the other devices. These radios can be wall mounted and are less likely to walk off or get misplaced than a handheld radio.
Handheld 2-Way Radio
The benefits of handheld radios is that users can be mobile and always receive and broadcase messages. In an emergency this allows for on the spot updates with the latest information.
