Sometimes a handheld 2-way radio isn't the right solution. The portability of handhelds are great, but that also means they can walk off with the people using them. A base station intercom mounts on a wall or sits on a desk and is plugged into an AC outlet so it doesn't go anywhere. It still communicates with handheld two-way radios.
Another advantage is that you can use external mast antennas on a base station so you can get better coverage to reach longer distances.
