Choosing the Right Wireless Technology for Your Security Intercom System
When choosing a wireless technology for a security intercom system, there are several options available: two-way radio, full-duplex 900MHz, WiFi, and cell phone network-based intercoms, each with its own features and benefits.
Two-way radio security intercoms (also called callboxes) operate on either VHF or UHF business band frequencies. These systems typically require an FCC license, but we offer callboxes that use the MURS (multi-use radio service) frequencies, which do not require a license. If you have existing radios, we can match their frequencies with our callboxes. These intercoms can cover a range of up to a mile or multiple floors in a building and are compatible with handheld or desktop base station intercoms.
Full-Duplex 900MHz intercom systems can reach up to 4000 feet, although they are more sensitive to line-of-sight obstructions compared to two-way radio callboxes. Unlike the push-to-talk, release-to-listen operation of two-way radios, these intercoms allow both parties to speak simultaneously, similar to a phone call. They feature noise cancellation, making them suitable for noisy environments, and we also offer a model with an external horn speaker for extremely loud settings.
WiFi intercoms require a WiFi signal at the gate or door. A significant advantage of these systems is that they typically include video, which can be accessed via an app on a smartphone or a touch screen tablet.
Cell phone network intercoms function using cell phone service, complete with their own phone numbers. When a visitor arrives and presses the call button, the system calls any pre-programmed phone number, allowing you to speak to visitors from anywhere. Additionally, you can use an app to send commands to unlock or hold open the door or gate, provided your gate operator supports these features.
