To set up a Ring Doorbell Intercom system that can open a gate remotely, you will need the following devices:
- Ring Doorbell Device: A Ring Video Doorbell (wired or wireless) installed at the gate.
- Ring Access Controller Pro: It integrates with the Ring system and allows you to unlock or open the gate through the Ring app when a visitor calls.
- Electric Gate Opener or Electronic Lock: Your gate must be fitted with an electric opener or strike plate lock that can be electronically triggered.
- Wi-Fi, Cellular, or CAT-5 Connectivity: Reliable Internet service at the gate location is necessary for communication between devices and the Ring app. If Wi-Fi is weak or unavailable, the Ring Access Controller Pro Cellular version (with a data plan) is an alternative.
- 12V to 24V AC or DC Power Source: Hardwired power for the Ring Doorbell and Access Controller Pro. A power supply is not included, but you can use power you already have at the gate.

Ring Intercom Cons
- Built-in Wifi Antenna: The internal and compact design of the antenna requires strong Wi-Fi signals at the installation spot to ensure dependable function. Weak signals may result from factors like distance or metal structures and concrete barriers. A Wi-Fi extender or closer access point might be needed to remedy performance problems that occur when the signal is weak. The Ring Access Controller Pro requires waterproof housing because it isn't waterproof and such housing can dampen the WiFi signal.
- No Keypad or Local Access: The device lacks built-in keypad functionality along with RFID or QR code options and any other method for manual entry. The Ring app manages access control unless you install extra hardware.
- Subscription Service: The Ring Video Doorbell operates without a subscription but offers real-time alerts, live video viewing and two-way audio communication with visitors at no cost while saving and sharing video recordings requires a Ring Home subscription. The Ring Home subscription gives you Extended Live View capabilities which enable non-stop video streaming beyond basic motion detection events and improved Doorbell Call functions which facilitate visitor interaction and area surveillance through security camera-like monitoring without any doorbell activation.
- Relay Contacts: The Ring Access Controller Pro features exclusively normally open contacts. The Ring Access Controller Pro will function incorrectly if your door strike or gate controller requires more normally closed contacts.
- Wi-Fi Limitations: The access controller functions exclusively with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and lacks support for the 5 GHz band. Using 5 GHz WiFi provides faster performance and reduces interference which can result in a stable connection when multiple 2.4 GHz devices are present.
- Privacy Concerns: The large number of Ring devices that have been sold makes them attractive targets for hackers. Hacking experts discovered security weaknesses in Ring devices which enable unauthorized access to user accounts as well as their cameras and video feeds.
