A MURS intercom is a type of wireless intercom that uses the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) frequencies. MURS channels are five unlicensed VHF radio frequencies in the 151–154 MHz range. These are authorized for use by the FCC and are widely used for local communications in the US.

MURS intercoms are long-range, license-free wireless communication devices. They typically have a range of several miles, depending on local terrain and interference from obstacles.

Uses for MURS intercoms include business radios, farm radios, access control for gated communities, warehouse radios, remote gate access and anywhere that you need to communicate without wires.

MURS Intercom Radio FAQs

Q: Is the MURS wireless intercom system legal for use in Canada?
A: No, MURS is not legal in Canada. However, Canadian versions of our UHF callboxes are available and can be used for similar applications. Recommended models include the RT1102, RT1103, and RT1064.

Q: Where can I buy the MURS Multi-Mile Wireless Intercom in Canada?
A: MURS is not legal in Canada, but Canadian versions such as RT1103 and RT1064 are available. Our store ships to Canada but has no Canadian suppliers.

Q: Are MURS intercoms in stock and available for immediate shipping?
A: Yes, MURS intercoms are typically in stock and ship the same or next business day depending on the order time. UHF callboxes currently have a 3–4 week lead time.

Q: What intercom is recommended for simple communication between a house and garage about 25 yards apart?
A: The RT1014 MURS wireless intercom is recommended. It supports communication over distances of miles and would work well for simple communication between a house and garage, though range may be affected by obstacles. If one building is metal I suggest you use an external antenna like the RT1009.

Q: Can the MURS Intercom system be used to intercom between multiple metal buildings, and how many units can be added?
A: Yes, you can add as many units as needed. All units on the same channel can be called at once, but you cannot call them individually. Metal buildings may interfere with signal, but using an external antenna such as the RT1009 Magnetic Mount Antenna with 25 Feet of Coax Cable can improve performance.

Q: What frequencies do MURS radios operate on, and are they analog or digital? Are the transmissions encrypted?
A: MURS radios operate in the VHF 151–154 MHz analog range. The transmissions are not encrypted. For encrypted communication, use DMR digital radios such as the RT1131, RT1130, or RT1110 models.
